Vegetative Propagation
When a non-reproductive part of a plant, such as a leaf, root or stem, is able to accomplish reproduction by growing into a complete plant. Many branches or leaves from plants can be placed in water and will begin to grow a root system, once this is accomplished it can grow into a complete plant. This new plant will be genetically identical to its parent.
there are many different types of vegetative propagation, some naturally occurring and some done by man. |

Grafting
Is an agricultural technique where tissues from one plant are transplanted to another of similar genetic makeup. Typically one plant is chosen for its roots or stem and another is chosen for its leaves, flowers or fruit. This allows for one plant to produce a variety of fruit or vegetables. The first picture to the right demonstrates how a branch is typically implanted into a existing tree and will be wrapped and left to mend over the next few weeks. The next three pictures show fruit trees that have different varieties growing on them. |
